Hi everyone, my name is Taylor McNeely, and I’m a Search Associate at ML6. As many of you know, or have likely experienced, trying to envision yourself at a company as a job seeker can be difficult. You try to read as much as you can find about their culture, onboarding process, and even career development opportunities, but without having someone to pull back the curtain and say “this is exactly what you can expect by joining our team,” this kind of research can only take you so far.
That’s why I’d like to share my experience as a new recruiter in our technology division, and shine a light on my experience joining ML6 as a new team member.
In this blog, I’ll go into detail about my onboarding experience, my initial impressions of the culture and work environment, and a few things I’ve learned along the way. In learning my story, I hope it helps you better understand if a career, or partnership with ML6 is right for you too.
My first impression
“Simple” is the one word I would use to describe my interview process. What stood out to me was how seamless it was! From my initial conversation to my offer letter, I was always kept in the loop.
The entire team gave me endless opportunities to ask as many questions as I had (and there were a ton!), and they really took the time to get to know me. It was clear that, from the beginning stages, ML6 would be a perfect fit for me!
The onboarding and training experience
Stepping into a new organization can be a daunting task for anyone, especially during these unprecedented times! Prior to my first day, my manager walked me through everything I should expect during my first week of training. She made me feel at ease, introduced me to new colleagues, and made me feel a part of the ML6 family.
The training bootcamp was unlike your traditional “orientation week.” My calendar was jam-packed with roleplays, daily one-on-ones, coffee chats, and recaps. It was really refreshing to see that ML6 gave me all the tools I needed to succeed, and I had a whole new team of people rooting for me!
A great culture can happen anywhere
When starting my job search, I knew that company culture was really important to me. In some cases, company culture can go down the drain when introducing a hybrid or remote structure for the first time.
Speaking from experience, it is 100% the opposite at ML6. The team understands that the workplace has evolved, and that company culture looks a little different than pre-COVID times.
What hasn’t changed at ML6 is how close-knit our group is. Whether you’re partaking in our bi-weekly company-wide trivia or our weekly recruiting huddle, our team has not slowed down when it comes to collaboration. Our leaders have steered the way in reinforcing ML6’s culture, and I can say that I feel closer to my team than ever before!
A supportive team from day one
A supportive environment undoubtedly makes for a better working atmosphere (virtual or not). With that said, I think the most surprising thing that I learned about ML6 was how supportive the whole team was.
Michael Lemmer, our CEO and Founder, told me from day one that he would put our team up against any other in the business, and now I understand why! I quickly learned that every employee — new or seasoned — is here to support one another. It feels really good to be surrounded by colleagues and friends who bring out the best in each other!
What I’ve learned so far
I’ve learned that resiliency is one of the most important traits that a recruiter can exhibit. Resilience is the ability to cope with stress and crisis, rebound quickly, and learn valuable lessons from their experience.
Understanding that setbacks will happen can be frustrating to grasp; in fact, many times, circumstances are out of your control. What is in your control, however, is the ability to move forward confidently and bounce back stronger than before.
Ultimately, our industry can be tough at times, but I’d say three top things important to being successful are the ability to:
- Rise to the challenge
- Adapt quickly and be flexible with changes
- Trust that you have done everything in your power to be successful
